As a young college student in the 1960′s I was swept up in the exciting, confrontational political climate of that period. The Viet Nam War was raging, the military draft was still activated, John and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King had been taken from us by assassination. The Beatles changed rock ‘n roll music forever and the movie “The Graduate” changed pop culture.

I graduated from school and began my career in business carrying; maybe burdened would be a better description, these influences at the core of my being. I was liberal without having enough of life’s experiences to really know why I was liberal or what that meant. I saw the world as flawed and felt that collectively we could make things better, safer, more peaceful and fairer. It made me feel good to want these things, although I had no understanding of how to make these altruistic goals obtainable.

Winston Churchill once famously said, “A man who is conservative at the age of 20 is heartless, a man who is liberal at 40 is a fool”. I was soon to cross the bridge from dreamer to realist, much as described by Churchill. I started my own business. That was when reality struck, and hit right between my eyes.

At about the time I made the leap into entrepreneurialism I was introduced to the writer, philosopher Ayn Rand. I read her monumental novel Atlas Shrugged. It was attitudinally, philosophically and politically a life changing experience for me.

Every idea I had nurtured from my formative years was called into question by the hero of Atlas Shrugged, John Galt. Rand’s libertarian philosophy, she called it “Objectivism”, is on full display in this powerful, logically based tale of the benefits and pre-eminence of individual rights. In the story, the productive, creative, ambitious, driven class of individuals, lead by John Galt, essentially goes on strike. Quite the opposite of a mass union strike, this stoppage by the few brings crisis to the many and itemizes the reasons that capitalism is the only economic system that can benefit the most people most often.

The power of Ayn Rand’s thinking, as evidenced by the characters and stories she wrote are enjoying a renaissance today. Born in Russia, she had fled that country after the rise of communism. Her experiences growing up in a totalitarian place made her a fierce opponent of all the “-ism’s”, communism, fascism, socialism, all forms of statism and collectivism.

At the core of the Rand philosophy was a concept based on limited government, laissez faire capitalism and individual rights. She believed that doing what was best for one-self was the only duty a person owed to society. Altruism was destructive to Ayn Rand. The modern liberal, now interestingly called “progressive”, despises the Rand view of man and believes her views reflect selfishness. And yet, it is only through the “selfishness” of the productive, entrepreneurial, risk taking class that all of society reaps the benefits of their creative, industrious enterprise. Poor people do not create jobs, and thus income, and thus taxes that support all level of government altruism and waste.

In this belief, Ayn Rand was really a modern acolyte of Adam Smith, the original philosopher of capitalism. Smith popularized the “invisible hand”, the concept that by profiting and seeking advantage for ourselves, we inadvertently provide benefit for others. America’s Founding Fathers resoundingly agreed with this philosophy and incorporated this principal into the Bill of Rights and Constitution. Rule of law, private property rights, individual rights and limited government enjoyed supremacy in the Founder’s eyes. These principles, so taken for granted and abused by government today, are the very glue that differentiates successful states from dysfunctional ones.

The early years of the 21st century will not be treated kindly by future historians. The lessons that history teaches are being ignored. Thomas Jefferson said, “He is governed best, who is governed least”. Who amongst us can honestly say that we are well governed by our all intrusive welfare, nanny-state?

The lessons and philosophy crafted by Ayn Rand have never gone away. Atlas Shrugged is the most popular book ever published, after the Holy Bible. Sales are again spiking for this, and all of Rand’s books. Because of the awkward intrusiveness and overreaching hand of government, there seems to be a revival of interest in the ideas represented by John Galt and Howard Roark in “The Fountainhead”.

Ayn Rand is the High Priestess of libertarian, free thought. As long as men seek to live free from the oppressive hand of tyranny and bungled government over-activism her place in history will be secure. There has never been a better time than 2010 to dust off old copies of Ayn Rand’s thought provoking classic tales and rekindle the passion for freedom that she so passionately portrays in her works.

This is an excellent novel to read by Toni Morrison. I had the opportunity to use this novel for a class in African-American Literature. The characters are easily traced and understood. The symbols used in the book to portray actually realities of life were just striking. The development of the plot intriguing, flow of the storyline very captivating and intoxicating. Having read this novel several times, I have found it to be a dynamic story of reality based on fictional characters.

The story in this novel of the Breedlove family in just simply amazing! Ironically, it is one without love, even though by virtue of the family’s name one would assume love is involved. The only thing one finds there is no love.

The moral of this novel brings several themes to light: First, that life is a struggle especially when one tries to maintain a quality of life in an environment that is hostile to his or her welfare. Secondly, it shows what happens to a female who lives in a family without love, while she is thirsty for love, and would love to be loved by others. Next, it shows how racial prejudice and self hatred affects a family and a person’s self image.

This excellent novel brings one to realize how the lack of opportunity, lack of intrinsic motivation, and feeling of inferiority affects a person’s life, thus stunning the growth of the person. Toni Morrison brings these concepts of reality to life in a very interesting way in this novel.

One must read this book to appreciate the story, images, conflicts, plot, and resolution. This is truly a classic example of life’s situation one must avoid; however, others are unfortunately experiencing these conditions across the world as we speak.

How to Publish in EBook or Paperback Formats

1. Many people-perhaps a majority-do not have the grammar, punctuation or word usage skills to write a publishable book without some need for education, practice and help from a professional editor, professional writer, or experienced English teacher. Although MS Word’s AutoCorrect tool has improved in recent years, it does not tell you if you have used the appropriate word. For any writer, it is essential to have a good dictionary. Assuming you intend to publish in the United States, Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary or the New Oxford American Dictionary would fill the need. For publishing in the United Kingdom, choose the Concise Oxford English Dictionary. In addition to a good dictionary, a reference book on grammar/style is indispensable. The classical Elements of Style by Strunk and White, Woe is I by Patricia O’Conner, and Grammatically Correct by Anne Stilman would form a good reference foundation. For guidance on the trickier aspects of style, choose either The Chicago Manual of Style from The University of Chicago Press or Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law from The Associated Press. Some publishers and writing authorities prefer the first of these manuals while others favor the second. Whichever handbook you choose, adhere to it; in other words, do not mix the two style approaches.

2. If you feel what you have written is interesting enough to be published, you will probably need to have it professionally edited unless you are very good at self-editing or have a friend who is capable of doing so and can be trusted to be objective and brutally honest. To proofread thoroughly what you have written on the computer, you should print the document. The printed document reveals flaws that you missed on the computer monitor. This is a well-proven fact. After reading the manuscript many times during the writing and editing, you will become so familiar with the contents that you will read what should be there rather than what is actually there. Having one or more other persons dedicated to the task is a better option. Again, if you wish to pass up the need for a professional editor, you must be a writer capable of good syntax as well as one who avoids punctuation and other grammatical errors. This skill may come over time by reading good books and employing plenty of practice in the art of good writing.

3. Professional editors usually provide proofreading, line editing and substantive editing, each being progressively more detailed and rigorous. Proofreading costs run between $0.02 and $0.05 per word. Line editing costs more than proofreading, but a manuscript with structural errors won’t get past a literary agent or publisher. For a manuscript that needs complete revision, substantive editing can cost as much as $0.15 per word. In the last instance, the editing charge for a typical novel running to 100,000 words could be prohibitive.

4. After editing, you need to find an agent who will seek a publisher interested in your book. Alternatively, you can approach small publishers directly. Publishing can cost between $2,000 and $5,000 depending on whether your publisher is a small independent one or a New York giant and whether you are required to share the costs.

The alternative to taking your manuscript to a publisher is to self-publish and you can do so in either eBook, or printed paperback format, or both. The eBook format’s popularity is growing at an exponential rate and has forced the curtailment of printed book sales in many locations, including the closure of large, national bookstores. Before proceeding with self-publishing you will need to obtain an ISBN (International Standard Book Number). Also, consider the artwork you would like to use on the cover of your eBook. You may be sufficiently talented in the use of Adobe Photoshop or similar software to produce your own. Both ISBN and book cover artwork can be provided by Firebird Media Management (see later reference).

To make a manuscript ready for eBook publishing, one must format it and the type of format needed depends on the seller e.g. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or Apple iTunes. Amazon has made available a Kindle article titled Publish on Amazon Kindle with the Digital Text Platform (DTP). The article provides a very clear guide on how to proceed with having your book published as an electronic book.

Accounts based in the United States must enter Name, Address, Payment Method, Business Type and either a Social Security Number, Tax Identification number, or an Employer ID Number. Accounts based outside the United States must enter Name and Address.

To prepare your text for uploading to Amazon DTP, you should convert it to a single.html file. One can save manuscripts written in Microsoft Word as an.html file by using the Save As command, selecting the Other Formats button and choosing Web Page from the drop-down menu.

You are now ready to begin the first step in preparing your title for digital publication on the Kindle Store. Click on the Bookshelf tab in DTP to begin.
